Prompt action by the Rietgat Crime Prevention Unit led to the recovery of a hijacked Ford Ranger and the arrest of four men in Soshanguve.

Unit members were conducting vehicle patrols at 23:45 on September 21 when they received tracking information regarding the vehicle.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, members immediately contacted the tracking company and were informed that the vehicle was being tracked towards Block IA, Soshanguve.

Arrests and recovery

Police proceeded to the area and spotted the vehicle parked on the side of the road, with four men standing and talking a short distance away.

Officers approached the men, instructed them to lie down, and searched them.

Three of the suspects were found with unlicensed firearms, while the fourth had keys believed to belong to the hijacked vehicle.

The men were arrested and face charges including carjacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, and attempted murder.

The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether they are linked to other criminal cases.

Rietgat Police Station commander Brigadier Devan Govender commended the officers for their alertness and swift response.

Van Dyk said the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
