Pupils invited to enter international competition

South African pupils are invited to enter the International Children’s Painting Competition.

South African pupils are invited to enter the International Children’s Painting competition.

The competition has been running every year since 1991 and its a first for South Africa. The competition is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE) based in Japan.

“It offers opportunity for the Youth to think deeply about the environment and to be creative on what they can do to address environmental challenges of our day,” UNEP South Africa’s Cecilia Njenga said.

She said this year’s theme was, We Have the Power. The theme was decided on because sustainable energy is a form of energy that does not run out or cause harm to the environment.

“The current theme offers children the opportunity to creatively think on how they can contribute to making this world a better place to live in – energy solutions, climate change and global warming,” she said.

The competition runs until 31 May and one winner from each of the following six regions will be announced: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, West Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America.

“The top three winners will also receive a fully paid trip to the venue of the award ceremony.”

Prizes range from US$3 000 for first price and US$1 000 for third price.

Interested participants can submit their entries online, by post or drop off at their nearest UNEP regional office.

Online entries can be scanned and uploaded on UNEP’s website www.unep.org/tunza/children.
