For the past few weeks residents of Pretoria Gardens have been bothered by alleged criminal activities taking place near their houses.
There is a trench being dug up the mountain in Tuin Street and residents are complaining about people coming at night to allegedly steal cables.
According to a resident, Steven van Rooyen, there are men every night at the trench busy digging up cables.
“The cables are old and we are not sure who they belong to. One night I called a municipal worker to come out and check if these people are legit or not.”
Van Rooyen said when the man arrived the diggers ran away. He said they always know the men are busy when their dogs start barking like crazy.
According to a reliable source, they have reported the theft of the old cables to police. “We have been to the trench. There are old cables in the trench. We do not know who they belong to and have tried to get Tshwane metro involved to find out if the cables are theirs,” said the source. He said the cables are very old and not working anymore but without them knowing who the owner is there is nothing they can do about it.
“It is illegal what these people are doing. They are stealing the cables to sell to metal dealers but without anyone taking responsibility for the cables, nothing can be done,” he said.
Van Rooyen said the trench hole on the mountain with the cables is about a meter wide.
On Wednesday there was a fire on the mountain and residents are not sure if the people were busy burning the cables or not.
The trench has become a problem for residents and they said the owners of the cables should remove the cables.
