The Tshwane metro has still not fixed the wrongful electricity disconnection of a block of flats in Pretoria West.
The residents of Loeriehof Flats in Christoffel Street have been without power for almost 30 days now.
“We are very upset by this whole situation because we stay in a dangerous area. After the power was cut we had two break-ins at the flats,” said the residents’ representative, Elsabe van Zyl.
The whole electricity problem started with a water leak outside the block of flats last year. Van Zyl said she reported the leak but the metro took three months before repairing it.
“The water leak was not from our side but on the side of the street. It is not our fault the pipe burst and we did report it in time but nothing was done,” she said.
Van Zyl said in December the body corporate of the block of flats paid R23 000 to Tshwane metro, which they allegedly owed the metro.
“In March we received a notice that our power will be cut because we owe the metro about R71 000 after we paid them R23 000 in December.” She said she struggled for months to rectify the problem with the metro about the leaking water pipe, until they got the account of R23 000.
The flats’ body corporate has taken the matter further and will be taking legal action against Tshwane metro because they are apparently not at fault.
“It is embarrassing for us to be without electricity and it is difficult to live without power for so long,” said Van Zyl.
According to the lawyers for the residents of the block of flats, the metro did not follow the right procedures when disconnecting the power.
The body corporate said they did not receive a letter of demand from the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in respect of outstanding electricity and that it would be suspended.
The law firm demanded the power supply to Loeriehof Flats be reinstated on 23 March, which the metro failed to do.
The Tshwane metro will apparently be taken to court soon.
The Tshwane metro has failed after numerous attempts to respond to enquiries sent to them.
