A fire hydrant in Elardus Park that has been leaking for roughly three months has residents in the area concerned about the waste of clean water.
After months of water troubles caused by bursting pipes, Pieter Bouillon was concerned about the amount of clean drinking water that had been wasted, with Tshwane metro seemingly unconcerned.
“I understand that there is a problem with the pipes in the area and I know they are repairing it systematically, but this fire hydrant has been leaking for months now,” Bouillon said.
“I have even fetched the fire chief and shown him this. He was going to report this three weeks ago, but I suppose because there are so many other forgotten issues this was also shelved. If a fire should break out in the area and the fire brigade needs to use this hydrant I have a horrible feeling it will just fall over, as it is rusted at the bottom.”
Bouillon was upset about his impression of a cavalier attitude by Tshwane metro regarding the waste of clean water. “I guess we probably have the cleanest storm-water drainage system in the country. Sparkling clean drinking water flowing through them,” he said.
“I had a leaking pipe on my property for about three weeks and my water bill for that month was unbelievable. Just imagine the amount of water that has gone to waste with this leak.”
Rekord reported earlier that Elardus Park had been plagued by broken and bursting pipes since last year and that Tshwane metro left a mess in the wake of each repair job. Tshwane metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo said the water and sanitation division was looking into the matter.
