Residents want roads fixed

Residents of Soshanguve have appealed to Tshwane metro to fix their roads after they were damaged by the rains.

Residents of Winterveldt have called on Tshwane metro to repair roads in the area that had been damaged by recent heavy rains. Several gravel and tarred roads had been swept away.

Rekord has received several complaints from motorists that it was difficult to drive around the area. The most affected were gravel roads in the township, which have turned into furrows, measuring up to a meter deep in Pinkies.

Local motorists said their vehicles were damaged by the bad roads and it was also preventing emergency vehicles to do their work properly.

“The municipality officials are always ignoring our calls for better roads. They only listen to us when it is election time. I have changed wheel bearings and CV joints twice since last year November. Something needs to be done because we are tired of these kind roads in our townships,” said Irvin Sibeko a local resident. Sibeko told Rekord the roads were in better shape before the recent rains a few weeks ago.

Another resident, Johannes Mokwena, said he reported the damaged roads to the local municipality but nothing was done. “I have reported the roads to Tshwane metro and they promised to send workers but nothing happened.”

Local ward councillor Sophie Sithole told Rekord some residents interfered with workers when they tried to fix the roads. “I previously arranged for the roads to be fixed but some residents interfered with the workers and prevented them from fixing the roads. I am busy arranging for the roads to be fixed again,” she said.
