Incorrect billing leads residents to petition

Faerie Glen residents are fed-up with incorrect billing and cut-offs of their electricity.

Illegal disconnections and incorrect accounts spurred residents of Faerie Glen on to start a petition in an effort to force the Tshwane metro to pay attention to the shambles in their account department.

“We have received an alarming increase in complaints from residents regarding illegal disconnections of their electricity due to incorrect accounts or non-delivery of accounts. People only become aware of outstanding accounts or incorrect accounts when cut-offs happen. Residents struggle to obtain or sort out accounts and it takes up to eight working days to reconnect their electricity, irrespective of it being Tshwane metro’s mistake or yours,” said Karin Meyer, councillor for the area.

She said for this reason they have decided that prevention of disconnection is the safest route and would like residents to sign a petition whereby the community demand that the Tshwane council send accounts monthly to e-mail addresses or by phone via SMS messages.

“This will ensure that a person can immediately pick up any discrepancy before any cut-off can take place. She invited homeowners who currently experience account problems to participate in the petition, detailing problems they are experiencing.

“We have had great responses from residents for the three Saturdays in March that we had our tables. We are now extending this petition to give residents another opportunity to sign. She said the signing of the petition will take place on 25 April and 9 May from 9:00 to 12:00 in front of Hokaai Meat Market, opposite Pick & Pay Hyper, on the corner of Selikats Causeway and Graaff Reinette Street in Faerie Glen.”
