Members of SAMWU march for better wages

Members of the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) marched through the Pretoria city centre along Lilian Ngoyi Street on Thursday, demanding better wages and services.

Regional secretary Mpho Tladinyane said they were addressing certain issues, including corruption. “There is a lot of corruption in the Tshwane municipality. Tenders are not being processed properly, and our construction people are unsafe because whenever it rains, they have nowhere to go. We need to make the government aware that we are unhappy with the way we are being treated,” he said.

Tladinyane said the workers were also not paid enough. “We believe in ‘equal work, equal pay’, part-time workers should not be paid around R2 000 a month for hard labour while permanent workers get R7 000. It should not happen, because all of them do the same job and work equal hours,” he said.
