Young woman almost fully recovered after shooting
Shot 19-year-old woman from Danville soon to return to work.
A young Danville woman shot recently in a botched hijacking is going back to work some time this week.
Chanté Oliveira (19) was hit in the stomach during a hijacking attempt outside her house about three weeks ago.
“Chanté is going back to work this week. She has recovered,” said her father Gini Oliveira.
He said the family had not heard anything from the police about their investigation into the crime.
The former Hoërskool Hendrik Verwoerd pupil was sitting outside her house with her boyfriend in his mother’s car in Bergartillerie Street when a taxi drove past.
“The taxi turned back and suddenly stopped in front of the vehicle. Four men got out of the taxi and told the couple to keep quiet and get out of their vehicle,” said Oliveira.
“Chanté and her boyfriend started screaming. I was in my room watching television when I heard their screams and looked outside. When I saw the taxi, I knew then there was trouble.”
Oliveira said he ran outside and when he got to the gate, two of the men were inside the couple’s vehicle trying to drive off.
“I tried to get one of the men out of the vehicle from the driver’s side, but they both escaped on the passenger’s side. One of the men then started shooting at me before they drove off in the taxi,” he said.
“One of the bullets struck something else before it hit my daughter in the stomach.”
He said Chanté was rushed to the hospital where doctors discovered the bullet was stuck in her pelvis.
“The doctors said they would have to wait for the bullet to drift closer to the skin before they could operate, assuring us this would not give her any problems.”
This process was continuing and the bullet still had to be removed, her father said .
Cluster police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said at the time the Pretoria West police had opened an armed robbery and attempted murder docket.
Approached this week, Pretoria West spokesperson Constable Lerato Ngomane asked for the enquiry to be submitted via email. She had not responded at the time of going to print.
