BREAKING NEWS: Baby killing shocks Mamelodi
Residents have vowed to help the police find the killer of a baby.
A baby has apparently been killed when a plastic bag wrapped around it was set on fire in Mamelodi East.
The killing last Friday has upset residents to the extent that they have vowed not to rest before the murderer has been found.
“We are sick and tired of women treating their newborns like dogs,” said resident Happy Phala.
“Why didn’t she use a condom or approach social services for help? Killing your baby like this is horrible.”
A recycling worker, who asked not to be named, discovered the dead baby in an open veld on Friday morning.
The badly-burnt body was wrapped in a piece of scorched plastic.
Social workers in the area are equally upset.
One of them, Anastasia Mosetlha, said a growing number of foetuses or stillborn babies were being found in and around Mamelodi.
“If women find themselves in a difficult situation concerning pregnancy, or do not want to take care of the baby, they are welcome to come to the Mamelodi social workers for help.”
She said some of these women got rid of their babies because they were under pressure. The fathers of these babies often refused to get involved.
“We would like to encourage the fathers of the babies to support their girlfriends during their pregnancy period,” Mosethla.
“We also offer counselling for women, such as rape victims, who do want to keep their babies. There are many safe places for children to be placed for adoption,” said Mosetlha.
Mamelodi cluster Captain Jan Sepato of Silverton police station confirmed that a docket of concealment of birth had been opened.
He urged people to come forward with information on the matter. The Mamelodi East police station could be reached on 012-815-7080.
