BREAKING NEWS: Cops swoop down on Sunnyside
Police arrested more than 35 people for being in the country illegally, possession of drugs and dealing in dagga, during a massive police joint operation in Arcadia and Sunnyside in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
More than 400 law enforcers swooped on Sunnyside and Arcadia in the early hours of Wednesday in a special operation to stamp out crime in the area.
Police commanders said this reflected the no-nonsense stance that had been adopted in the fight against drugs and prostitution in and around Sunnyside.
Led by Sunnyside station commander Brigadier Nhlakanipho Mthembu and Sunnyside cluster commander Maj-Gen Jimmy Ledwaba, the operation involved police from various police clusters around Pretoria, Tshwane metro police, traffic police and SA Receiver of Revenue.
Among the police units were the tactical response team and K9 Unit.
Police raided a number of block of flats, including Tamboti and Zelimba.
No fewer than 38 people were arrested and drugs and dagga confiscated. Among those arrested were 35 foreign nationals who were in the country illegally.
The illegal immigrants would be handed over to the department of home affairs.
Two people were caught with 3.7 grams of dagga in their possession.
The drug CAT was found packed in several small bags and one person was arrested, who would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
Ledwaba said the Sunnyside cluster had a low crime rate, but the operation was important to keep crime contained.
He warned criminals that they would face the law if committing crime in the cluster.
“Criminals are not welcome here. They should go away,” Ledwaba said.
He said police would conduct similar operations in the future.
The most common crimes in Sunnyside were prostitution, theft out of motor vehicles, hijackings, drugs and robberies.
Sunnyside Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Sandile Dube applauded the police for its hard work.
“We grateful about the operation. This is what the community has been crying and looking for,” Dube said.
