Somali man dies after shop fire
Police have confirmed that one of the Somali men set alight in Soshanguve has died.
A Somali national recently set alight in his shop in Soshanguve has died of his injuries, police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Coantable Reneilwe Makwalo said Ibrahim Rana died late on Sunday after he had suffered 80 degree burns to his body.
“Investigations are continuing and we hope to arrest the suspects soon.”
The man had been treated in George Mukhari Hospital along with his co-shop owner Ismail Ismail, who also suffered serious injuries.
Makwalo said: “Crimes of armed robbery, attempted murder and murder are being investigated.”
The two Somalis were attacked at their shop in what the police had described as a “criminal incident”.
Several items, including airtime, food and money were stolen from the shop.
Makwalo said the second Somali was in a critical but stable condition.
She would not be drawn on speculation that the episode could have been related to the recent spate of xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
