Call for tough punishment on girlfriend murder accused
Richards Motshweni, accused of killing his girlfriend, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court recently.
The ANC Women’s League called for murder accused, Richards Motshweni, to be denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Motshweni was arrested after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Lerato Motsege, to death at one of the Silverton lodges in November last year.
“Richards must be sentenced to life. He must be removed from the society,” Mamafa Marumo, member of the Women’s League, said during the picketing outside court.
The protest took place before Motshweni’s court appearance.
More than 20 Women’s League members held placards slogans like: “Speak out against violence against women”; “Women’s dignity lies in the campaign for the rights of all”; “No amount of money will buy you justice”; and “If you kill a woman you kill a nation”.
Some picketers were wearing T-shirt with a photo of the deceased Motsege.
It is alleged that Motshweni kidnapped Motsege before the murder. Motshweni spent a few weeks in hospital after he allegedly attempted to commit suicide.
Brother to the late Lerato, Jonas Motswege said, “Motshweni cut both his arms and neck with a sharp object trying to commit suicide after my sister had been murdered.”
Motshweni’s bail application has been postponed to mid-May.
