Croc carcasses to be probed

The Gauteng agriculture department has launched an investigation into the discovery of multiple crocodile carcasses in the Bon Accord area in recent weeks.

An investigation has been launched into the discovery of crocodile carcasses in the Bon Accord area, the Gauteng department of agriculture said.

Spokesperson Andile Gumede said the department did not allow or promote the keeping of crocodiles as pets.

“We issue permits for keeping of crocodiles to zoos and for farming purposes only. Nile crocodiles are listed as a protected species in the Threatened and Protected Regulation Species in terms of National and Environmental Management,” Gumede said.

He said municipal bylaws had clear guidelines on the disposal of carcasses and dumping them in an open space was prohibited.

Gumede said residents could report suspicious activities to the local municipalities.
