Elderly man killed on smallholding
Police suspect an axe or a garden tool was used in the murder of an elderly man in Onderstepoort on Wednesday afternoon.
An elderly man’s body was discovered on his smallholding in Onderstepoort, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday afternoon.
The man, believed to be in his late 60s, was found with numerous facial wounds.
Police spokesperson Constable Reneilwe Makwalo said a garden tool picked up on the property might have been used as the weapon. The police also suspected an axe could have been used.
“We cannot confirm at this stage which weapon was used. We are still waiting for the results of the post mortem,” she said.
She said the man’s daughter phoned her father as usual to check on him as he was living alone.
When there was no reply, she drove out to the smallholding. She found the house open with no sign of her father.
“She phoned police for help. They searched the premises and discovered the man’s body.”
Makwalo said the preliminary indications were that only clothes were stolen.
A murder docket was opened by the Pretoria North police.
