Several areas exempted from blackouts

Several areas in Pretoria are exempted from load-shedding because they provide essential services.

People living near hospitals, the South African Mint and the central business district (CBD) do not experience load-shedding as those areas provide essential services, DA Tshwane councillor Ina Strydom said on Thursday.

Because the Tshwane metro switches off sub-stations to put loadshedding into effect, Strydom said people in the areas mentioned were safe from blackouts.

The Standard Bank Centre in the CBD had to remain powered as it was running computer systems for all banks in the country.

“If that area is shed, banks in the country won’t operate, affecting everyone,” said Strydom.

Hospitals could not operate on back-up generators only.

“Hospitals’ electricity is not allowed to be shed as they need the power for surgery.”

She said the CBD is exempted from load-shedding as power was needed to keep criminal courts running.

“Loadshedding does not apply to the courts as court proceedings cannot be stopped.”

Strydom said the Union Buildings was also exempted from load-shedding.
