Silverton community applauded for fighting crime

Police applaud the community of Silverton for fighting crime in the area.

Silverton police applauded residents for interrupting a house break-in on Moreleta Street.

Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said a 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after a neighbour saw him breaking into a house.

“The neighbour saw the man in the yard passing electrical equipment over the wall to his accomplice. She went to the front of the gate and tried to block the robber from escaping,” he said.

He said the robber jumped over the wall instead and ran off with his accomplice while the neighbour yelled out for help.

“The suspects tried to run away and the robber was apprehended by a resident not far from the scene. The accomplice managed to get away. Police were contacted and the robber was arrested,” Sepato said.

He said they recovered stolen items the robbers had left at the scene. A microwave, DVD player and a remote were returned to the homeowner.

“The stolen items were valued at R6 000 and the suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of housebreaking and theft. We applaud the Silverton neighbourhood and encourage the participation of the community in fighting crime.”
