Xenophobia rears its head in Sosh

Residents in Soshanguve Block F are living in fear after a Pakistani national was shot and killed. The murder took place in the shop he rented in Soshanguve Block F recently.
Residents and landlords are now afraid their lives might also be in danger. The day after the shooting residents attended a meeting where it was decided that residents should protect other nationalities to prevent any further killings.
A resident of Block F who wants to remain anonymous said residents in the area did not want foreigners in the country. “The problem is that when they come to the country [South Africa] they bring substances like drugs which demoralise the youth of this country.”
“These people [residents of Block F] target foreigners because they see that they are here to make money. Now foreigners have to lock themselves [in their houses] to protect themselves. Last week a foreigner was shot three times and died,” said another resident of Block F who wanted to remain anonymous.
Constable Reneilwe Makwalo from the Soshanguve police said: “There were no xenophobic attacks reported and the incident that happened was a mere robbery.” She added that police had community meetings in Block KK and Block F a week after the shooting to raising awareness among residents because xenophobia would not be tolerated.
No one has been arrested in connection with the Pakistani’s murder.
