Newborn baby found dumped in a waste bin at shopping complex
A newborn baby boy was found dumped in a waste bin at a shopping complex in Soshanguve.
A baby thought to be just a few hours old was found dumped in a waste bin at a shopping complex.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said the gruesome discovery was made at Soshanguve Plaza on Tuesday morning.
Mangena said the newborn boy was discovered by a woman who makes a living out of recycling papers and bottles.
“The woman opened the waste bin hoping to find papers and bottles – but was shocked when she saw the dead body of a newborn baby,” said Mangena.
The baby, who weighed 3.7kg, was found abandoned in one of the waste bins waiting to be collected by a waste removal truck in front of the complex.
The woman immediately alerted the security guards at the complex, and the police were called in.
“We rushed to the scene and found the baby covered in blood-stained sheets,” said Mangena.
Mangena said police suspected the baby might have been dumped in the early hours of that morning.
“An investigation is underway and we are hoping to trace the child’s mother. We believe she may have given birth close to where her baby was discovered,” said Mangena.
Shopping activities were disrupted when shoppers gathered around the waste bins where the baby boy’s body had been discovered.
“A case of concealment of birth was opened at the Rietgat police station,” said Mangena.
Mangena appealed to residents with information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the gruesome deed to contact the police.
“Anyone who knows someone who had been pregnant but now has no child and was no longer pregnant is asked to report the matter at their local police station,” he said.
