Pickpockets caught on camera
Shoppers are warned of pickpockets stealing phones from handbags in the Monument Park area after four thieves were caught on camera on Monday.
Monument Park shoppers have been warned to secure their valuables after two women were arrested for stealing a cellphone from a woman’s handbag in the local Spar.
Trish Scheepers, safety operations manager of Brooklyn Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF), said two men and two women distracted their victim inside the supermarket on Monday.
Closed circuit television footage from inside the store show’s a man pushing a trolley and bumping into a woman.
The woman is surrounded by the two women. One of them talks to her while the other quickly snatches the cellphone from her handbag.
The fourth man is seen pacing up and down near the butchery section, attentively watching what happens.
The one woman walks away soon after taking the phone. The two men also leave.
The victim is then seen searching her handbag for her phone upon realising it was taken.

“We called that phone and it was ringing in one of thieves’ bags, which belonged to the women who took the phone. Fortunately we dialled it while they were still in the shop and we arrested both of them,” Scheepers said.
She said Spar’s management and security chased after the two men, but they managed to flee in a car.
“We need the help of the community to help us find them. They drive a light blue Toyota Conquest, registration number DR 19 ZX GP and a red Ford, registration number PBK 765 GP. If you spot them, please phone us on 072 136 2911.”
