Shot man stumbles into police station
Shot and wounded man rushed the Pretoria North police station for medical assistance.
A wounded man stumbled into the Pretoria North police station late on Tuesday afternoon in search of help.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Rebecca Phatlane said a friend was assisting the man, who was rushed to the Steve Biko academic hospital.
A bullet entered his upper body under his left arm and there was no exit wound.
Phatlane said the victim’s friend told the police the two of them were walking down Danie Theron Street, taking orders for products they were selling.
“The friend was walking a bit ahead of the victim and when he turned around to look for his friend he saw him sprawled on the ground,” she said.
“The victim is an asthma sufferer and the friend’s first instinct was that he had an asthma attack. When he reached his friend’s side he saw the bullet wound under his arm.”
She said the victim told police that he saw a stranger at one of the houses in the street and suddenly heard a loud sound. He felt pain shoot through his body before he collapsed.
Another visitor to the charge office, Lizelle Ferreira, said she saw the man entering the charge office.
She claimed the police officers behind the charge desk initially asked bystanders to phone an ambulance, saying they could “do nothing” for the wounded man.
Ferreira said she did so but struggled to get hold of the ambulance services. Police eventually took over from her. She said one of the police officers also asked the victim why he did not go directly to the hospital for medical attention.
Phatlane said an off-duty police officer was informed about the victim by 17:29 and was at the scene within five minutes. The off-duty officer had medical training and was requested to help the wounded man.
She said the off-duty officer phoned paramedics who immediately thereafter rushed to the scene and took the man the hospital.
Phatlane said any complaint of misconduct by the police should be submitted to the station commander. The matter would be investigated and action would be taken against the culprit if necessary.
