Mams murder-accused abandons bail application
The alleged Mamelodi serial killer Daniel Ntokozo Masango has abandoned his bail application, a move welcomed by residents.
Suspected serial killer Daniel Ntokozo Masango has abandoned his bail application.
This emerged when he made a brief appearance in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday on three charges of kidnapping, murder and rape.
Ntokozo (25) was arrested on 4 May after he was linked to the death of Katlego Ndlovu, who was found dead and raped behind a Shell garage in Mamelodi East.
Scores of residents turned up for his court appearance and to voice their opposition to him being granted bail.
The matter was postponed to 30 June for further investigation at the request of prosecutor Anne-Marie Bendeman.
She said: “We have written a report that the case be tried at the High Court as it is murder coupled with rape.”
She also said the court had received a petition from residents of Ward 23, asking that the suspect not be granted bail as they feared he would become a victim of mob justice.
The petition was signed by 552 residents.
Strike Mtshweni, secretary of the 4+1 Taxi Association, said people such as Masango should not be granted bail.
“They don’t belong in society. Mamelodi is a peaceful place, not a place of crime. The suspect has made the right decision. The law must make an example of him. Rapist and murderers must be permanently eradicated from our society.”
Sindiswa Nkosi, ANC Women’s League zonal secretary, aired similar sentiments.
“We came here today to oppose bail for the suspect, as well as to support the family of the deceased. I am happy with the decision that the suspect took,” she said.
“We are going to follow this case until justice has been done. People must speak out, they must not be afraid. Violence against women is violence against our society.”
The community of Mamelodi, together with the ANC Women’s League and Youth League, the 4+1 Taxi Association and the Mamelodi community policing forum attended the court appearance.
Ntokozo will remain in police custody.
