Robber breaks into metro cop’s home
The Orchard's community apprehended a man after he broke into a Tshwane metro police officer's home on Monday afternoon.
A man was caught after breaking into the home of a Tshwane metro police (TMPD) officer in Pretoria North on Monday afternoon.
He was arrested after the Orchard’s community in Pretoria North and police on patrol chased him.
Amandasig Action Group Sector 4 (AAG) operations manager, Erich Landsberg, said the man was found by the officer’s 15-year-old son when he came home from school around 15:00.
The teenage boy arrived to find a broken window and the alarm ringing, Landsberg said.
“The boy saw the window broken and he blew an air horn as their security company had not yet responded to the alarm. The community heard the air horn and started chasing the intruder down the street,” he said.
He said the man was caught by police on patrol who joined in on the chase.
The robber fled empty-handed after he had already unpacked the officer’s cupboard and apparently wanted to take her new TMPD helmet and uniform, Landsberg said.
“He told the officer that he knew her, where she worked and what cars she drove.”
Landsberg said another home in the area was broken into last week where the intruders were in TMPD uniform.
“It seems these robbers are targeting TMPD officers so they can steal their uniforms to use in other robberies,” he said.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said these issues were being dealt with by the police.
“The crime statistics in that area are handled by the police. Regarding the officer who had her home broken into, I cannot comment as it is a private issue,” Mahamba said.
Akasia police spokesperson Captain Riana van Aarde said a burglary docket was opened.
