Elderly ‘sprinter’ caught with dagga in Menlo Park
A 60-year old man was arrested for possession of dagga after a chase on foot in Menlo Park.
A 60-year-old man with the speed of a sprinter was caught with dagga in Menlo Park on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the arrest was made after he was chased by police and residents.
“A police reservist and a police officer from the Brooklyn police were on patrol in Menlo Park area when they saw a man hiding a plastic bag next to the road on the corner of Justice Mohammed and Thomas Edison streets.”
When the two police officers stopped to investigate, the man grabbed the plastic bag and ran away, said Weilbach.
“The police reservist ran after him while the other officer tried to block the road with the police vehicle. A local saw the police were trying to apprehend a man who at that time was sprinting at an ‘unbelievable’ speed,” she said.
“The man then joined the chase together with the police and he managed to catch the suspect,” Weilbach said.
Weilbach said a drug dealer learned the hard way that one could not outrun the police in partnership with law-abiding citizens.
“After he was caught, the police searched the plastic bag and discovered 1.11 kg of dagga and close to R3 000 in cash inside the bag.
The man from Lotus Gardens was immediately arrested and will appear in the Hatfield Community Court on drug-related charges on Thursday.
Colonel Andrew Lesch, the acting police station commander, commended the Brooklyn police reservists for their dedication and thanked the community for its continuous support in the fight against crime.
