Hazeldean water supply restored

Hazeldean residents happy as water is finally restored.

Interruptions in the water supply in Hazeldean finally came to an end last Thursday, with normal flows fully restored.

The water was cut off on 14 May. A resident, who asked not to be named, said people had been unable to wash clothes or go about their daily activities as usual.

“I had not had a proper warm shower in days. We have only been given water between 12:00 and 06:00.”

Curro Hazeldean said the school had been struggling to cope.

Spokesperson Johan Goosen said the school had to devise expensive back-up plans.

“We have had to hire water carts as well as portable toilets. The chairperson of the parents’ committee, Louis Riekert, has been instrumental in helping us organise this.”

Goosen said on Monday the water pressure was still a problem.

Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillor André van der Walt said there was some confusion over the cause of the interruptions of more than 10 days.

“Initially, it was thought a blockage was to blame. After a few days it turned out a closed-off valve caused the reservoir to run dry,” he said.

“This problem took much too long to fix. It’s time for the city to pull up its socks.”

Another problem plaguing residents in the area was the continual bursting of water pipes. “The ageing water infrastructure urgently needs to be replaced.”

It was recently revealed that 136 000 metres of water pipes in the east of Pretoria needed to be replaced urgently.

DA ward councillor Duncan Baker said a shortage of money, artisans and spares to service a large area had hampered the replacement of the pipes.

Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba acknowledged the problem. “We acknowledge the water network in that area needs refurbishment.”

He sought to assure residents that the matter was being treated as a priority.
