Police deny claims on Mamelodi killing
Police have dismissed claims that a Mamelodi hostel dweller was shot and killed by an officer.
Claims of a man being shot dead at the Mamelodi West Hostels, purportedly after refusing to pay a bribe, were dismissed by police on Monday.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the man was killed in a shootout between the dwellers and the police during a crime prevention operation.
“Police officers had arrested several people and some of the dwellers were demanding to be released. After police confronted them, a shootout ensued and one person was fatally shot,” he told Rekord.
According to reports, Class Modibe was killed after a police officer shot him when he failed to pay a bribe.
Dlamini denied the claims.
“We are still trying to investigate whether it was one of the suspects or a bystander that was accidentally shot and whether the shot came from a police officer or a member of the public.”
He said a murder docket had been opened and no arrests were made.
