Amandasig man followed and robbed
Residents are urged to help fight crime after a man was followed home and robbed of thousands in Pretoria North on Wednesday.
Four armed thieves robbed a man of R20 000 in Amandasig on Wednesday.
The Amandasig Action Group (AAG) said the man was followed after he withdrew money at the Wonderpark shopping centre.
AAG operations manager Erich Landsberg said the robbers were travelling in a Mercedes Benz.
He said the AAG received a call from the shopping centre’s security about four armed men in the Mercedes shortly before the robbery was committed.
“A few minutes later, we got another call through the radio saying the car was leaving the shopping centre and we instinctively thought that they might be following someone.”
Warnings were put out on social media and then someone reported that he had been robbed by four men driving the same car.
Landsberg said the victim, who lives in a security complex in Jan van Riebeeck Street, was followed home.
“When he entered the complex, the Mercedes was behind him. One of the guys jumped out of the car and stood by the gate’s sensor to keep it from closing. The other three went into the complex and boxed their victim when he parked in his garage.”
Two armed men jumped out of the car and robbed the man of R20 000, two cellphones and his house and car keys. No one was injured.
Landsberg urged people in the north of Pretoria to join the social media pages of their local neighbourhood watch.
“Facebook is a very powerful social media platform that can assist in the apprehension of criminals.”
Pretoria North police spokesperson Lieutenant Rebecca Phatlhane urged residents to be vigilant when withdrawing money.
“Use internet banking if possible. Be vigilant when driving with money in your vehicle and drive to the nearest police station if you suspect you are being followed,” she said.
