Child protection week

Stakeholders join hands to raise awareness during child protect week.

Mamelodi West police and Mamelodi West social workers, National Prosecuting Authority and the of department of correctional services visited Refentse and Ezazi Primary Schools to promote awareness for the child protection week.

The group spoke to pupils about their rights as children. The awareness campaign highlighted the rights of children as expressed in the Children’s Act. According to Mamelodi West police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso they spoke to the children about their rights and that the police were here to protect them.

Maheso advised pupils to report any crime to the police and explained the role of law enforcers. “We want to prevent and combat crimes against children, including rape, incest, assault, kidnapping, child pornography and the sexual exploitation of children,” said Maheso.

Mamelodi West social worker Anastasia Mosetlha said children needed to be protected every day. The campaign was running from 27 May until 2 June to remind children, teachers and parents that child protection is important every day.

“We talked to the pupils about the different kinds of abuse and we were very excited about the response from pupils and teachers,” Mosetlha said.

Speaking on behalf of the correctional service, motivational speaker Abel Mbonani encouraged pupils to attend school and not to do crime.

He also explained to the pupils that life in prison was not good and that there was no freedom. Therefore children should avoid crime and drugs. When they need expensive luxury items they must study and get a job in order to buy those when they grow up.

He concluded by stressing to the pupils that crime did not pay and they would end up in jail if they committed crime.
