Scores of firearms stolen
Police urge firearm owners to apply strict safety measures.
No fewer than 190 stolen weapons were seized from criminals in Gauteng last month, the police said this week.
Provincial spokesperson Lt-Gen Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said nearly five stolen firearms were recovered in Gauteng on a daily basis.
Most of these weapons were taken from criminals who stole them from firearm owners during house robberies or due to the negligence of the owner.
“Firearm owners who need advice on safeguarding their firearms should visit their local police station for more information,” he said.
Security measures included locking the firearm in a safe where no unauthorised person or child could gain access.
Firearms should not be left in motor vehicles or be carried in the open, said Dlamini.
When the owner of a firearm had died, the weapon should be handed in to the police. A firearm licence had to be obtained anew by whoever it had been left to.
“Firearm owners who lose their firearms through negligence or keep them negligently are guilty of an offence and will have their licences revoked.”
Dlamini urged firearm owners to consistently apply strict safety measures when storing their weapons.
