Confusion over police boundaries
Sunnyside police educate residents about new station demarcations.
New boundaries for Sunnyside and Pretoria Central police, effective since April, are causing confusion among residents.
Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said on Thursday most residents were reporting cases at the wrong police stations because they lack an understanding of the new boundaries.
“Most people come to the Sunnyside police station, reporting cases which took place in parts of Nelson Mandela Drive, which is policed by Pretoria Central police,” Malatsi said.
Clarifying the issue of new police station demarcations, Malatsi said residents needed to know the new boundaries to ensure quick police service.
She said, prior to April, Nelson Mandela Drive was within the boundaries of both Sunnyside and Central police stations. From the city centre southward, Sunnyside police were responsible for the left side of the street and Central responsible for the right.
With the latest changes, Central police are responsible for both sides of Nelson Mandela Drive, from Kotze to Edmond streets. Sunnyside police are responsible for both sides of Nelson Mandela Drive from Kotze Street up to the Fountains circle. Sunnyside police are also policing the R21 from the Fountains circle up to Elephant Road.
Malatsi said the boundary changes also affected the east of Sunnyside where their policing boundary has been extended from the corner of End Street in Hatfield up to the railway line. They also cover a part of the N4 from Frances Baard Street up to the N1 interchange.
Malatsi said they wanted people to be aware of the changes and encouraged residents to work with police in fighting crime in the area. “It is important for residents to be the eyes and ears of the police. Working together makes it easy to fight crime.”
