Irene car thieves at large
Two armed car thieves are at large after they stole a car at a mall in Irene.
Police are searching for two armed men after a shoot-out between them and security officers near Irene Village Mall on Saturday afternoon.
Spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said the men had stolen a Toyota Yaris at the mall and were pursued by security officers around 15:00.
The security chased them on the R21 north freeway where a traffic officer also joined in on the chase. The men then fired shots at the chasing officers, he said.
He said the thieves stopped and jumped out of the car and continued to fire shots at the security officers.
Miller said the officers returned fire.
He said upon searching the abandoned car, a firearm, remote jamming devices and vehicle breaking equipment were found.
According to Lyttelton sector 3 community policing forum spokesperson, Albert Gravett, cellphones and sim cards were found as well as a list of vehicle registration numbers.
Miller said the men escaped and are still at large.
“At this stage, no arrests have been made. We are investigating an attempted murder.”
