Councillor punched back at two armed thieves
Councillor Elma Nel fought back when two men tried to rob her on Tuesday.
Ward 58 DA councillor Elma Nel saved herself from thieves when she punched back at two men who suddenly approached and attacked her through her car window on Steve Biko Road on Tuesday.
Speaking from Eugene Marais hospital, Nel said she punched so hard that she had pieces of their skin stuck in her rings.
She said she was approaching traffic lights around 15:00, with her car window slightly open.
“Two men suddenly came up to me, one had a big knife and they demanded my laptop.”
She said the thieves forced her window open and began punching her in the head and trying to stab her.
Fearing for her life, Nel fought back by punching and scratching the criminals.
“My whole life was on the line. One fell to the road. The men were so shocked and frightened that they just walked away. They did not realise I could punch so hard.”
She said the thieves walked away empty handed.
The councillor suffered neck, back and head injuries.
Nel said she opened a case at the Sunnyside police station with the help of a Tshwane metro police officer.
“I tried to go to the police station but I couldn’t see properly due to my head injuries. I met a metro police officer on the road and he escorted me to the police station. I want to thank him for helping me.”
Nel took to Facebook to post images of her injuries and her rings with the caption: “To the two savages who just punched me in the face and tried to stab me for my laptop, I hope the marks of my rings on your faces hurts as much as your fists did on my face.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said a case of assault is being investigated.
