City not doing anything about robots

Robots on the Maunde and Quagga roads intersection still not repaired.

Several attempts to get comment from the Tshwane metro about the repair of traffic lights on the Maunde and Quagga roads intersection have been futile.

Atteridgeville entrance from Maunde Road is considered a danger by commuters and residents. Several accident have occurred on the corner of Quagga and Maunde roads because of traffic lights not working.

According to South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) chairman Nagesh Chetty, the contractor who was given the job to repair the traffic lights removed the old ones and installed new ones that are simply not working.

“The contractor was employed to repair the traffic lights. He took the old ones out and replaced them with new ones that are not working. The contractor has been missing for three weeks with no response to the problem. It is a major problem with traffic at the intersection without functioning traffic lights,” said Chetty.

He said the traffic lights could have been sold to scrap metal dealers because they had been lying on the side of the road a while back and now they were gone.

“I would say that about 65% of motorists do not stop at the intersection to give each other an opportunity to cross. Faulty traffic lights not working is a risk to children and other people using that road. People from Atteridgeville, Soshanguve, Pretoria CBD, Centurion, Laudium and more areas use that road every day,” said Chetty.

Percy Mokoena, who owns a food business near the intersection, said he has seen a lot of accidents happen there. He said residents were calling upon Tshwane metro to get the traffic lights working again before more accidents occur and people lose their lives.

“This is bad because our own mayor and other ward councilors use the road but they don’t seem to care about the dangers of the out-of-order traffic lights,” Chetty concluded.
