Mixed bag of results for Bafana Bafana

Bafana's draw against Gambia overshadowed their win against Angola on Tuesday.

South Africa’s 2-1 win over Angola on Tuesday in Cape Town was overshadowed by their inability to score in crucial games.

Bafana‘s win against Angola was nothing but a consolation to the fans as the team failed to win when it mattered most against Gambia on Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Bafana had to come from behind to defeat Angola at the Cape Town Stadium after Palancas Negras put Angola ahead towards the half-hour mark.

Shakes Mashaba’s men pushed for the equalizer soon after but nothing materialised for about ten minutes, however that did not stop them from pushing more men into the box to force an equaliser. The equaliser came when May Mahlangu unleashed a powerful shot to which the Angolan keeper saved but Thamsanqa Gabuza was in the right place to tap in and put the scores level on half-time.

The second half started with Bafana on the ascendancy and they were rewarded in the 68 minutes when Thulani Serero found Ayanda Patosi, who calmly chipped the keeper to make it 2-1, his goal however was awarded to an Angolan defender as he had the last touch while trying to clear the ball out.

On Saturday, Bafana were held to a goalless draw against ‘minors’ Gambia in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier. Their inability to break a team ranked 160th in the world left many fans fuming and a win against Angola didn’t help because the match was an International Friendly. Some say Bafana only does well in friendlies and that is why they found it easy against Angola.
