Man to appear in court over stolen rental car
A Pretoria man was to appear at the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday after a rental car was stolen from OR Tambo International airport.
A 36-year-old Gezina man accused of stealing a rental car from a company at OR Tambo International airport was to appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the man also faced a charge of perjury after he allegedly reported a false hijacking to the Tembisa police station.
“The vehicle company became suspicious of the hijacking claims when they failed to find the man in Tembisa, where he was supposed to have met a representative of the company. Furthermore, his phone ‘stopped working’ and they could no longer locate him,” Naidoo said.
He said the police were informed and together with the tracking company, the car was found at a mall parking lot in Gezina.
Naidoo said the car was found without number plates and licence disc.
“Unaware that the police were lying low within the vehicle’s vicinity, a man approached the vehicle and just as he opened it, he was surrounded by police officers. He was then identified as the same man who rented the car.”
The man would face further charges of fraud after police apparently found three ID documents and four drivers’ licences with different names but bearing his photo at his home.
Four credit cards with different names were also found, Naidoo said.
“This suspect will be further profiled to determine if he is wanted in connection with other cases.”
Earlier this month, a Midrand man was arrested for buying a car stolen from another rental company at the OR Tambo International Airport.
