Man back in court after rented car theft
A Gezina man will be back in court on Friday after he allegedly stole a car from a rental company at the airport.
A Pretoria man accused of stealing a car from a rental company at OR Tambo International airport will be back in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Perfect Harold Ngonyama (36) was arrested last week and made his first court appearance on Monday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said Ngonyama allegedly hired the vehicle but did not return it, telling the car rental company that he had been hijacked in Tembisa.
“He allegedly laid a false hijacking charge at the Tembisa police. His cellphone suddenly ‘stopped working’ when he was due to meet a representative of the rental company, and the company reported him to the police.”
Naidoo said the car was found parked at a mall parking lot in Gezina last Thursday with no number plates and licence disc.
Unaware that the police were lying low within the vehicle’s vicinity, Ngonyama was arrested when he allegedly opened the car. He was identified as the same man who rented the vehicle.
Police found three ID documents and four drivers’ licences with different names bearing his photo at his home, said Naidoo.
Four credit cards with different names were also found, Naidoo said.
“As a result, Ngonyama is facing 12 charges, which include theft of motor vehicle, perjury after opening a false hijacking case and 10 counts of fraud.”
Ngonyama remained in custody pending a bail application on Friday.
