Mamelodi’s suspected serial killer was back in the local Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday as angry residents turned up droves to be present.
Daniel Ntokozo Masango (25) from Mamelodi East made a brief appearance on charges of kidnapping, murder and rape.
He was arrested on 4 May after he was linked to the death of Katlego Ndlovu (23), who was found dead and raped in Mamelodi East last year.
Her badly-burnt body was discovered in a dumpster in an open veld. Two other women were found dead in the same area last year.
Residents gathered outside the court, demanding that the trial of Masango be speeded up.
Mamelodi councillor Moses Phasha welcomed the support the family of Katlego was getting from the community.
“Rapist and murderers must be permanently eradicated in the society.” he said.
Prosecutor Anne-Marie Bendeman said Masango would be back in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on 15 July.
The court received a petition from the residents of Ward 23 on May 18, asking that Masango not be granted bail as he might become the target of revenge. The document was signed by 552 people.
Masango has since abandoned his bail application.
Residents said on Tuesday they would follow the trial closely until justice had been done.
Some chanted: “People must speak out and never be afraid. Violence against women, is violence against the society.”
Members of the ANC women’s league, Youth League, 4+1 taxi association and the Mamelodi CPF also attended the court appearance.
Katlego’s aunt Agnes More said family needed closure in order to be able to carry on with their lives.
The criminal justice system should stop dragging its feet in this trail, she said.
