Donkeys shot and left for dead
Two donkeys were shot and left for dead because they were taking “too much space” on an open road.
Two donkeys had to be put down after they were shot and left for dead in Sekampaneng near Hammanskraal.
Tshwane SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou said a 53-year-old man accused of shooting the donkeys were released on R500 bail earlier this week.
He said two sets of donkeys and their owners were moving down a pathway in Sekampaneng on 25 June when the 53-year-old man approached the donkey carts.
“The man accused the owners of taking up all the road space before pulling out a firearm and pointing it at them,” Matlou said.
“The men, five in the one donkey cart and three in the other, fled into the bushes for safety. The man fired six to seven shots at the donkeys and the carts.”
He said there were four donkeys. Two donkeys escaped harm but the other two suffered gunshot wounds to the head and upper body.
“I was informed of the shooting and responded. When I reached the scene both injured donkeys were still alive but in a very serious condition. They lost a lot of blood and were stumbling around, trying to flee.”
Matlou said he had to euthanise the donkeys due to the extent of their injuries. “They were in severe pain and suffering.”
The man was arrested by the Temba police. He would be back in court next month.
“I am pleading with community leaders to impress on their communities the importance of animals,” Matlou said.
“They were placed on earth by God for human beings to love and not to harm. Animals are innocent and deserve our respect and compassion.”
