Mother and children killed on railway track
A mother and her two children died on Friday morning in an apparent murder-suicide. Another body was also discovered near the scene an hour later.
A mother and her two children were killed in an apparent murder-suicide on Friday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Riana van Aarde said the indications were that the mother had tied the children, aged four and seven, to her waist with a blanket.
She was apparently standing on the railway tracks in Kopanong, Soshanguve, when the train hit them just after 06:00.
“An inquest docket was opened and police are investigating. The woman and the children’s identities have not yet been identified due to the severity of their injuries.”
Van Aarde said another death was discovered an hour later that morning about 500m from the scene of the train accident.
A 37-year-old man apparently ran from his home on Thursday night. She said it was unsure if the man had a mental illness.
“According to information, the man fled his home and his family was looking for him the entire night,” said Van Aarde.
“His body was found in a stream on Friday morning at 07:00. It is unclear what had caused his death but he appeared to have drowned.”
She said investigations to determine the cause of his death were underway.
