Primary school children exposed to damaged electricity box

The children at Laerskool Menlopark are exposed to danger with Tshwane metro delaying repairs of a damaged electricity meter box.

Pupils at Laerskool Menlopark were still exposed to danger because Tshwane metro has not yet upgraded a damaged electricity meter box on the school’s premises.

According to Ward 82 councillor Siobhan Muller, the school approached the metro about the dangerous state of an electricity meter box in February last year.

She said an amount of R12 000 was paid to the municipality early this year for the upgrade of the mini sub-station, yet nothing has been done.

“The damaged [electricity box] is inside the school property, exposing the inquisitive children to extensive danger. The electricity infrastructure in Menlo Park needs upgrading in general and the excuse for no infrastructure upgrades is always given that no funds are available,” she said.

She said the Menlo Park substation, a few blocks from the school, also needed upgrading and maintenance.

“In the meantime there is a daily danger that the school children can be injured, or worse electrocuted, due to the delayed upgrade.”

Tshwane metro council spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said their energy and electricity division investigated the complaint. “Findings revealed there were unforeseen technical glitches during the processing of the request for an electricity supply upgrade. This resulted in a delay finalising this matter,” he told Rekord.

He said a team was dispatched to look into the upgrade but discovered the current cable needs to be replaced.

“As soon as the cable is available, the upgrade will be finalised.”
