Man arrested for Amandasig break-in
Two men are still at large after their accomplice was arrested after breaking into a house in Amandasig on Sunday afternoon, police said.
A man was arrested after he and two others broke into a house in Amandasig on Sunday afternoon, the Amandasig Action Group (AAG) said.
Spokesperson Erich Landsberg said the trio forced the gate open and entered the yard on Naboom Street, where two girls, aged 10 and 15, were in the house.
He said the girls locked themselves in a room while the three criminals broke down the security gate of the house.
“They took the kids’ cellphones, two television sets and jewellery. When they got back to their car, a silver Renault, the home owners arrived and parked in such a way that the suspects could not escape with their vehicle,” Landsberg said.
The robbers threw bricks at the home owners and their car before a neighbour called a security company.
The three men jumped over a wall into a neighbour’s yard, Landsberg said.
“Two of them ran away while the third one pretended to be visiting at the house where he was hiding. The security captured him and brought him back to the crime scene.”
He said the arrested man used his wife’s car in the robbery attempt.
“He is going to show the detectives where his two friends are. The message from the community is clear: We will not stand back and let thugs come to our neighbourhoods to rape and steal as they please. Action will be taken.”
Akasia police spokesperson Captain Riana Van Aarde said a house-breaking and theft docket had been opened and police were investigating.
