Beware of Daspoort tunnel robberies
Community warned about robbers in the tunnel and urged residents to be safe.
Danville residents have complained about the Daspoort tunnel becoming a dangerous spot, following a number of robberies in the tunnel recently.
According to residents who have been using the tunnel, the reason for recurring robberies was as a result of dysfunctional lights in the tunnel.
“The tunnel gets really dark at times with half of the lights inside not working. Criminals use this as an opportunity to rob our children,” Danville resident Mike Monale said.
He said his son has been robbed twice in the tunnel. “There is nothing we can do since we do not have a car and there are no taxis passing through the tunnel so my son has to walk through it.”
Another resident of Elandspoort, Koba van der Poll, said her son was almost robbed in the tunnel.
“My son was on his way to visit us from Booysens. He was riding his bicycle through the tunnel and in the middle of the tunnel, he noticed something dropping in front of him,” said Van der Poll.
“A bottle had been thrown at him. He turned back and took a different route to Elandspoort. Another boy from our area was also robbed in the tunnel.”
Residents said mostly young children were targeted to be robbed in the tunnel.
“We just want to warn people about what is happening and we need the police to maybe patrol the tunnel at night. Tshwane metro also needs to ensure the lights get repaired,” Monale said.
