Prison escapee, Floyd Mabena (35) was shot dead on Sunday morning.
Mabena was serving a life sentence at the Losperfontein correctional centre in Brits, in the North West when he escaped.
According to North West police spokesperson, Captain Paul Ramaloko, details surrounding Mabena’s escape are not clear.
“The escapee hijacked the PPS security company vehicle. The security company workers then gave chase to him,” he said.
At the Ga-Rankuwa off-ramp from the N4 freeway a shootout ensued and Mabena was shot and killed instantly.
“The security vehicle was recovered. A case of escape and hijacking has been opened at Brits police station and a case of murder opened with the Akasia police,” Ramaloko said.
There are unconfirmed reports that there are more prisoners who escaped at the Losperfontein prison on Sunday morning of which some of them are still at large.
The Losperfontein Correctional Services could not be reached for comment.
