Brown Street no longer a hotspot
Criminal and drug activities on Brown Street have drastically gone down.
The notorious Brown Street in the Pretoria CBD is no longer a drugs and crime hotspot, the police said.
Sergeant Ann Poortman, spokesperson of the Pretoria central police revealed that while there will always be random criminal acts, the situation is not as bad as it had been in 2014. Last year there were media reports that said members of the police were colluding with drug dealers in the Pretoria inner city. “We have not heard about any serious issues on Brown Street and the entire immediate vicinity since the street was cordoned off. Our sector managers are working to ensure the area stays as crime and drug free as possible,” said Poortman.
The levels of crime started decreasing drastically after the street was cordoned off from Lilian Ngoyi Street with strictly controlled access on Sisulu Street.
“Businesses and street vendors continue to operate normally around the area. Of course, there is the ubiquitous presence of our members as well as the Tshwane metro police. Together, they make arrests on a daily basis. Arrests made are mainly for dealing in drugs or possession thereof,” she said.
According to Poortman, 51 suspects have been arrested since the beginning of July while 11 have been caught since 6 July to date. All those nabbed had committed various drug-related crimes.
Nyaope is the drug that is synonymous with the street that was once a haven for the nyaope boys. Poortman urged members of the public to be vigilant at all times and report any suspected criminal activities using the SA Police Service hotline on toll free 10 111 or 112 from a mobile phone.
