Petrol station safe blown up in robbery
Petrol station robbed by four armed men in the early hours of Monday.
Four armed men blew up a safe and robbed a petrol station in Wonderpark on Monday morning. The robbery took place at the Caltex garage at around 00:30.
“Four armed men arrived at the garage and two of the men walked into the shop and demanded staff to lie on their stomachs. Police are investigating a case of business robbery after the Caltex garage was robbed,” Akasia police spokesperson Captain Riana van Aarde said.
While two robbers were planting explosive charges at the garage safe, a security guard and a cashier were held at gunpoint. The robbers blew up the safe and got away with an undisclosed amount of money. Van Aarde said another two armed men were waited for their accomplices outside.
Erich Landsberg, the Amandasig Action Group, Police Sector 2 operations manager said the robbers were driving a white BMW, and that when they fled they apparently also hi-jacked a tipper truck and rushed off.
“When fleeing the scene the armed robbers shot at a police vehicle that was patrolling in the area. The police called for backup,” Van Aarde said.
She said they were still investigating and more information will be made available once they are done.
