Several Yorkies stolen in the west of Pretoria
Residents worried over the theft of their Yorkies over the past weekend.
Residents in the west of Pretoria are worried about the rise in theft of Yorkshire Terriers in the area. Over the past weekend a couple of Yorkies were stolen from their homes.
Heartbroken resident Lorraine Erasmus, whose Yorkie (Chochie) was stolen on Saturday, received her Yorkie as a present, when her previous one died of old age.
“I am angry about this. The day I turn my back for a few minutes they steal my dog which was like one of the children in the family,” Erasmus said.
Two of her other dogs (a Fox Terrier and Doberman) are also missing the Yorkie, as much as she and the children miss the dog. This was the first time Erasmus has had a dog stolen, but dogs in the area were often stolen.
“I just reported my Yorkie on all the web pages and on Facebook and at Wollies animal project too,” she said.
Another resident who lives in Market Street, Claremont, said her Yorkie was stolen in a matter of minutes.
“My Yorkie bitch was stolen from the yard. It does not seem to bother the thieves that someone is home or not. The front door was open and I just went to the back of the yard to fetch something and when I came back she was gone,” Elsie Maritz said.
The Market Street resident said since her dog had been stolen she has learnt there have been more dogs stolen in the area. Two were apparently stolen in Pretoria Street and one in Beacon Street, Booysens and two were stolen in Mountain View.
Korky Levanon from the SPCA said the dogs would sell for about R3 000 to R20 000. She said it all depends on the breeders.
“We always advise people to keep their pets out of street view,” she said. Levanon was not aware of any increase in the theft of Yorkies.
Residents in the west of Pretoria are advised to keep their dogs safe – small dogs are especially easy to steal.
