A 24-year-old man was shot and wounded during a high-speed chase in Eersterust on Wednesday night.
Constable Sam Shibambo said the man allegedly hijacked a silver Mercedes Benz A180 from its owner at Honeydew in Johannesburg.
Shibambo said the police spotted the vehicle in Silverton and signalled for the driver to pull off the road.
He said the man suddenly sped off towards Eersterust when a shoot-out ensued between the driver and the police.
“The suspect opened fire at the police and police were forced to retaliate. The man was shot and wounded before his vehicle was cornered in St Joseph Street.”
He said the driver was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital where he is under police guard.
A case of possession of a hijacked vehicle was registered at the Eersterust police.
Shibambo said the man is in a stable condition in hospital and would appear in court as soon as he is discharged.
