Police intensify weekend operations
Due to increased crime over weekends in the Pretoria central policing precinct, police will be intensifying their operations every weekend.
Police will be stepping up crime busting in the Pretoria CBD. Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman says there had been an increase in all kinds of crime in the city. Police have committed to intensify weekend operations in the CBD.
“In the recent weeks, there has been an increase in the number of crimes committed during weekends and we have deemed it important for us to address these now instead of later,” Poortman said.
She revealed the predominant crimes over weekends were largely robberies, assault ‘with grievous bodily harm’ and alcohol abuse.
“Over the last weekend, of those arrested, 19 suspects were nabbed for possession of stolen property such as sub woofers, car amplifiers, copper cables, cell phones, electrical equipment and two hijacked motor vehicles which have since been recovered,” she said.
Poortman added that 40 more suspects were arrested in the central policing precinct for such theft, attempted murder, drunken driving and drug-related crimes. All those arrested appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and Atteridgeville Community Court during the week.
“The weekend operations are not a once-off occurrence but will be carried out every weekend. We urge the communities to refrain from buying stolen goods, and a warning that anyone found in possession of stolen goods will be arrested,” said Sergeant Poortman.
