Man attempts to set girlfriend on fire
A man has been arrested after he covered his girlfriend in paraffin and tried to set her alight.
A 31-year-old man nearly burnt his girlfriend alive when he soaked her in paraffin and tried to set her alight.
A neighbour intervened by forcefully taking the matches from the man before he could set his girlfriend on fire.
Mamelodi police arrested the man on Thursday for assault with purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said the arrest came after the man’s girlfriend reported an alleged attempt to set her alight by dousing paraffin all over her body.
She claimed her boyfriend assaulted her after she asked for money to buy food. The boyfriend then went to a shop and returned with a loaf of bread and a container filled with paraffin.
“While she was busy preparing tea for him, the suspect allegedly soaked paraffin all over her body and tried to burn her. However, an unknown male who heard the noise came to the rescue by forcefully taking the matches from her boyfriend,” Mbewe said.
The boyfriend then allegedly went inside a room, armed himself with a steel water boiler and started to hit her several times on the upper body until she fell down, covered in blood. He then fled the scene but was later arrested.
The boyfriend will appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court soon.
