Man charged after shooting at police
A man has been charged after he was accused of firing multiple shots at Laudium police.
A man accused of firing multiple shots at Laudium police appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police spokesperson Captain Louise Steynberg said he was charged with attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The man was arrested around 19:00 on Friday night in Laudium after a run-in with police.
“Police received a tip-off about an armed man driving in a silver BMW. Two patrol vehicles saw the parked BWM in 3rd Avenue and moved closer,” Steynberg said.
“When one of the police officer approached the vehicle on foot, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and tried to run the officer over.”
The car reversed all the way down the street in an attempt to get away. The driver also fired shots at the police and police retaliated.
“The police also opened fire when the driver suddenly put his vehicle in gear and fled. Moments later the driver returned to the scene and rammed into one of the police vehicles. He then drove into a ditch where police arrested him,” she said.
Steynberg said the police found a holster on his hip but no weapon. Police suspect he dumped the firearm when he fled the scene the first time.
She said police suspected the man was from Limpopo because the car had number plates from that province.
No one was injured.
